Definition Of Safety Glass

Safety glass, specifically tempered or toughened glass, is a specialized type of glass that undergoes controlled thermal or chemical treatments, which enhance its strength significantly compared to standard glass.

Through the tempering process, and then outer surfaces of the glass are compressed, while the inner layer is placed under tension.

This unique structural composition not only makes the glass much stronger, but also ensures it breaks into small, granular pieces rather than sharp shards, and reducing the risk of injury.

To tempering, there usually 2 ways including chemical strengthening for the glass thickness below 3.0mm and thermal tempering for the glass thickness above 3.0mm.

Tempered Cover Glass Customization Processes

cover glass production flows

Weiman Tech role as glass OEM, which source raw materials for shape and drill hole by CNC machine.

Cutting: Rough shapes by diamond unit or laser cutting from big sheet of glass substrate into rough shapes of the final products, but edge is still sharp and big tolerances.

CNC processings:Edge grinding and chamfering, slotting, hole drilling.

Tempering: Chemically strengthening for thickness under 3.0mm and thermally tempering for 3.0mm thickness above.

Silk screen print: For thin thickness cover glass option, we use resin ink for print and for thermal tempering we use 3.0mm thickness above.

Coatings(AR, AFAG):

AR means anti reflection by electroplating base on different spectral bands, single side increase 3-4% light transittance and double sides up to 99% at most.

AF with 2 kinds of methods including electroplating(costly but more durable) and spray(cheaper but less durable), it can also protect the AR coating from easy peel off.

AG means anti glare to scatter the ambient light or sun light to screen and reflect to the eye.

Bonding: Mainly focus on 3M tapes including adhesive transfer tape, VHB tape and OCA tapes.

Lamination: Foil to protect from dirt and explosion proof sheet for better anti scatter.

FAQ:

Q1:Why there are chemical strengthening and thermal tempering?

A1:For chemical strengthening, it mainly used in glass thickness under 3.0mm for better protect the flatness but improve the hardness.

The thermal tempering focus on glass thickness 3.0mm above to form the safety glass.

Q2:What kind of glass substrate should be chosed?

A2:It depends on your budget and requirement.

Soda lime glass is cost favourable option but less hardness: 6H, so it mainly focus on low end applications.

Aluminosilicate has better performance in hardness(8-9H) and color clarity, but cost will be higher than soda lime glass, also depends on different brands.
