The Science Behind Chemical Strengthening( Ion Exchange Process Explained) For Strengthened Glass:


The transformation occurs through a precise thermal chemical treatment:

400°C molten potassium nitrate baths (6+ hours)

Sodium-potassium ion substitution creates 40-100μm compression layer

800-1000 MPa surface stress (vs. 50-100 MPa in untreated glass)

A simple words: The bigger K+ ion replace Na+ ion during chemical reaction, which create better hardness glass surface to resist impact, scratch, drop etc.

What Processes Can Be Selected On Strengthened Glass?


We’re not only offer bare  glass but also offers:

Silk screen print:

Low temperature ink(Including UV resistant ink, usually 3mm below) and ceramic ink(usually 3mm above with thermal tempering).

Coatings:

AR(anti reflection, single each increase 3-4% transmittance)

AG(anti glare, roughness, haze and transmittance can be customized)

AF(anti fingerprint, spray cheaper but less durable and electroplating more durable but expensive than spray method).

Bonding: 3M tapes(Including VHB tape) and OCA tape(fully transparent), can be customized base on design.

Lamination: Except regular foils, explosion proof sheet also can be offered.

What Inspection Will Be Done On Strengthened Glass?


Except visual inspection, we also arrange:

For coating:

We will arrange transmittance test in different wavelengths for AR coating.

For AG coating, we will test the transmittance(VLT), haze and roughness(Ra) base on design to see if they’re under tolerances.

For AF coating, we will arrange water angle test to verify the coating effects and rubber test to check durablities.

For silk screen print:

We will arrange paint adhesion test and use colorimeter to verify if color difference under acceptable range, visual inspection for defectives.

Tempering test including CS, DOL and anti impact test.

FAQ


Q1:What glass substrate will Weiman regularlly used for cover glass?

A1:Less hardness requirement: AGC glass(6H, soda lime glass).

Higher hardness requirement: Aluminosilicate glass(usually Panda Glass, and if brand needed Dragon Tail or Gorilla Glass).

Others like borosilicate, Schott, let us know your requirements.

Q2:What kind of ink will be applied in cover glass?

A2:It depends on actual glass and application.

For glass below 3mm, we usually recommend low temperature ink + chemical strengthening because ceramic ink should use thermal tempering.

If outdoor purpose, we could use UV resistance for the ink more durable.

For glass 3mm above, both low temperature ink and ceramic ink can be applied, the ceramic ink can’t peel off even scratch by knife.
