Custom Instrument Glass Panel for Measuring Instruments

Instrument glass panels protect the front of equipment while allowing users to read scales, indicators, measurement values and other displayed information. Depending on the instrument design, the glass may sit in front of a digital display, an analog gauge, a status indicator or a printed scale.

We manufacture custom instrument glass panels for equipment manufacturers that require specific dimensions, thicknesses, edge conditions and mounting features. Each part can be developed according to an engineering drawing, sample or agreed specification.

Unlike a general display cover, an instrument glass panel may need to accommodate a viewing area, printed reference marks, a shaped opening or a defined mounting position. These details should be established before production so that the glass fits the instrument housing and performs as intended.

Glass Options and Custom Processing

Glass Thickness and Dimensions

Glass thickness should be selected according to the available installation space, panel size, mechanical requirements and mounting method. We can review your specified thickness and dimensions before quotation.

Please provide the overall length and width, glass thickness, dimensional tolerances and any critical reference points. For panels with irregular outlines, a dimensioned drawing is preferred.

Cutouts, Holes and Edge Finishing

Instrument glass panel may require mounting holes, connector openings, notches or custom contours. Depending on the design, glass processing can include CNC machining, hole drilling, edge grinding and polishing.

Hole diameter, hole position, edge distance and corner geometry should be specified on the drawing. These dimensions are particularly important when the glass must align with a housing, gasket or fastening system.

For related processing information, see our Glass Edge Processing page.

Silk-Screen Printing

Black borders, colored markings, logos and designated opaque areas can be incorporated into the glass design when required. Printing can help separate the visible reading area from the surrounding housing or conceal selected internal components.

Artwork should identify the printed areas, colors, viewing windows and any required registration tolerances. If markings must align with a scale, indicator or display, please provide the corresponding reference dimensions.

Surface Treatments and Glass Strengthening

Depending on the application, instrument glass may be supplied with chemical strengthening, thermal tempering or specified optical surface treatments. The appropriate option depends on the glass composition, thickness, geometry and service conditions.

Anti-glare treatment may be considered when reflections make readings difficult under the intended lighting conditions. Anti-reflective treatment may be relevant where reflection control is a priority. These treatments are not interchangeable, and their suitability should be assessed against the instrument’s viewing requirements.

For more information, see Chemical Strengthening Glass.

Typical Applications

Instrument Glass Panel applications

Custom instrument glass panels can be considered for:

  • Measurement instruments: Front glass for equipment displaying measured values, scales or operating status.
  • Digital meters and gauges: Protective glass positioned in front of numerical readouts or indicator areas.
  • Electrical test equipment: Front panels for meters and test instruments, subject to the equipment’s design requirements.
  • Laboratory instruments: Glass panels for viewing and reading instrument displays or indicators.
  • Industrial monitoring equipment: Custom glass components used in instrument housings where a dedicated front viewing panel is required.

The final design depends on the instrument’s construction. If the glass must also function as a touch interface, optical window or sealed barrier, please identify that requirement in the RFQ so the correct specifications can be reviewed.

Manufacturing and Quality Inspection

For OEM orders, we recommend confirming the drawing revision, glass material, thickness, dimensions, edge finish, hole positions and printing artwork before production.

Inspection requirements can be defined around the features that matter to your assembly, including:

  • Overall dimensions and thickness
  • Cutout and hole positions
  • Edge condition and visible defects
  • Printing position, color and coverage
  • Surface treatment requirements
  • Packaging and handling requirements

Our Cover Glass Quality Control & Inspection page provides further information about inspection considerations for custom glass components.

For electrical measuring and control equipment, the applicable product safety requirements depend on the complete equipment and its intended use. Instrument glass alone should not be assumed to establish compliance with an equipment safety standard. Refer to the relevant IEC 61010-1 standard information when defining the equipment’s compliance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you manufacture instrument glass panels from our drawings?

Yes. Please provide a dimensioned drawing with the glass thickness, tolerances, edge requirements, holes, cutouts and printing details. A physical sample can also help clarify the design.

Can the glass include printed scales, logos or black borders?

Printing can be specified for logos, reference marks, scales and opaque borders, subject to artwork review and process feasibility. Please identify the viewing areas and printing dimensions on the drawing.

Can you supply glass for digital meters and analog gauges?

The design can be reviewed for both types of equipment. The required dimensions, visibility, mounting arrangement and any printed markings should be specified for the intended instrument.

Which glass thickness should I choose?

There is no single thickness suitable for every instrument. The choice depends on panel size, available space, mounting conditions and mechanical requirements. Share your drawing and application details for a more informed recommendation.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Please provide the drawing or sample, material preference, thickness, dimensions, quantity, required processing, surface treatment, printing artwork and destination country. If you have separate requirements for prototypes and mass production, include both quantities.
